World-Class Violinist Jonathon Glonek Comes to Nimbin
Nimbin audiences will have a rare opportunity to experience one of Australia’s leading concert violinists up close when internationally acclaimed virtuoso Jonathon Glonek performs at the Nimbin Bush Theatre on Sunday, August 9 at 2pm.
Presented by the Bendoc Philharmonic, the special solo concert brings a world-class classical performance to the heart of Nimbin, with Glonek presenting a virtuosic program spanning some of the greatest music written for the violin.
The program features masterpieces by Bach, Paganini and Ysaÿe, alongside a particularly personal work, Scheherazade’s Dreams, by acclaimed Ukrainian composer Mikhail Shukh.
It is a piece with an extraordinary story behind it.
Glonek first met Shukh while performing in Kyiv with the Kyiv Festival Symphony in 2002. The meeting developed into a lasting friendship, and Shukh later composed the technically demanding Scheherazade’s Dreams specifically for Glonek.
Inspired by Rimsky-Korsakov’s beloved Scheherazade, the work reimagines its iconic themes through a contemporary musical lens while remaining firmly rooted in the classical tradition.
Its inclusion makes the Nimbin concert much more than a collection of celebrated works. It offers audiences the opportunity to hear music born from a personal relationship between composer and performer, interpreted by the violinist for whom it was written.
For Glonek, the program also reflects his belief that classical music is not something confined to another era. It continues to evolve and can remain immediate, accessible and emotionally powerful for contemporary audiences.
With a career spanning Australia, Europe, Asia and the United States, Jonathon Glonek has earned a reputation as one of Australia’s leading concert violinists, renowned for both the expressive quality of his playing and his technical mastery.
An important part of his work has been taking performances of this calibre beyond metropolitan concert halls and into rural and regional communities.
Glonek said he was particularly looking forward to performing in Nimbin and connecting with a local audience.
